The characters all live in a fictional city named Heartlake in a fictional version of Michigan.

Michael is quiet, but sassy. When he's around his family he opens up in his own way, while at work he's more stoic. He used to be in the army alongside his wife, and now he works for a security company run by an army friend. Most of his job is desk work or being a security guard.

Michael and Stephanie’s charming son. He's works in an office and spends his off time hanging out with his girlfriend Emily and his friends Tina and Jack.
Michael and Stephanie’s socially awkward daughter. She's a gym cashier, outside of that she enjoys playing airsoft with her friends Jill and Natalia.
Stephanie’s boss, neighbor and childhood friend. A gay ex porn star from the south turned sex shop owner. She’s a very sweet and kind woman with a touch of OCD. She has a black cat named buster.
Joy’s wife, an accomplished scientist in botany who also has a large interest in space. She’s exceptionally intelligent and kind but because her work keeps her isolated for long periods of time, she has some social awkwardness she can’t seem to outgrow.
Jack’s father, a janitor and ex street fighter, Dave is a talkative smartass, but he's very handy and capable. He is hopelessly in love with Gina.

The Murphy Family Butler. Built by Harold and maintained by Emily, he cooks, he cleans, he does repairs and more! Charles has a friendly attitude and is great with kids, he’s been with the Murphy family for years.

Ken’s older brother, a large fighting game wizard that competes overseas in japan where he has quite the reputation. He’s fluent in japanese and likes to collect figures. He makes his money winning tournaments and streaming videogames while also working in a Bobsins family owned pet store.
Dwayne and Ken’s younger sister. She has a warm personality and a fondness for animals. She works in the Bobsins family owned pet store.
Odessa's boyfriend and Dwayne's friend, Akihiro is a Japanese man who met them in a grocery store on a business trip in America. Akihiro and Dwayne became fast friends by talking about American and Japanese media.
Now Akihiro stays with Dwayne during his trips to America, while Dwayne and Odessa stay with Akihiro during their trips to Japan.

Sandra’s partner in crime, Valentine is a cold and calculating woman with decades of experience in the criminal underworld. Valentine is rather fond of Sandra, as Sandra’s cheerful and rowdy personality has managed to pry some genuine smiles out of Valentine during their many years together.

In the mean time, he is thoroughly enjoying prison life and the occasional visitation from his android son Wallace, Wallace’s girlfriend Sabrina, and his old friends Harold, Sandra, and Lionel.

Cloning companies are a regular thing in the world of Fruit Basket, though the making of animal people like Jeremy has is considered a taboo and is legally dubious in the present day. Here's cloning has impacted the world.
- Hospitals will want organs for transplants, which is for Healthcare Issue.
- Citizens may want to raise a kid, which is a Family Issue.
- NGOs may need to make more animals for places to keep the biome healthy, which is an Environmentalist Issue.
- Meat is cheap because they're growing all the meat in this world rather than farming it.
- Most animals still being farmed are for the rich who want to have "authentic" meat.
- Countries and Space Programs may need to do all of these things in space, which is a Space Travel Issue.

A fictional cartoon fast food mascot that the whole brooks family has a crush on, besides Mary and Stephanie.
